Antique Longcase / Grandfather Clock by William MARRIOTT of Northampton ~ circa 1810.
William Marriott is recorded working in Northampton in the early 19th century and his son, also William, continued the business working from 1841 until 1869.
The delicately painted dial is decorated with fruit typical of the period, with grapes to the arch & peaches to the corners, within gilt chevron borders. The chapter ring displays Arabic hours minutes. The dial centre is complete with subsidiary seconds dial, twin winding holes & semi circular date aperture, beneath which is the makers name. Original matching diamond pattern steel hands. The dial & false plate are stamped B.Wright & Co. who are recorded as working in Birmingham between 1805-1820.
The original 8 day duration, two train plated movement with four turned & knopped pillars, is rack striking & sounds the hours on a bell.
An elegantly proportioned oak case, standing 87" tall, is of a style often seen in clocks of the Northamptonshire / Bedfordshire area, probably originating from a Lincolnshire case maker. Typical features include the moulded swan neck pediment with decorative dental sharks teeth detail to the inner edge, arched dial hood with reeded columns, interestingly shaped pointed top to the long trunk door & taller than square base standing on generous swept plinth.
Altogether a very pleasing Georgian longcase clock in good condition and with the added merit of it's local origins.
Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on the clock movement included in the price of £5450.
