William ROWLANDS of Pwllheli, North Wales ~ early 19th Century.

William Rowlands was a member of the extensive Rowlands family working in the clock making industry in & around this part of Wales throughout the 19th century. The family are well documented in William Linnar's comprehensive Welsh Clocks & Clockmakers. William is listed in directories working from High Street Pwllheli 1835~56.

Featuring a well executed vibrant 131/2" square period 2 dial of most interesting form & colour. Roman hours & Arabic quarter numerals surround a secondary seconds dial & date aperture, with sprigs of flowers flanking the winding holes. The spandrels with central medallions depicting corn stooks against a mountainous background. Original matching diamond pattern brass hands.

The brass plated 8 day movement, with 4 turned & tapering pillars, is rack striking & sounds the hours on a bell. The pendulum rod, quite unusually, having a detachable iron bob.

A good quality restrained oak case being particularly pleasing. The swan neck pediment with central fluted tablet & finial block. Nicely fluted slender hood columns & back splats continue the decorative theme. Fancy shaped trunk door flanked by conforming fluted quarter columns. The upper & lower stop blocks with line inlay. A similar line inlay panel is seen below the door. Well detailed moulding to the square & swept bracket plinth. Standing 86" tall excluding the brass finial.

A nice quality & most attractive example of late Georgian Welsh clock making.

Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on the clock movement is included in the price of £4950.
