James Wright ~ Knowle
in Warwickshire,
circa 1750.
Watch & Clockmakers of Warwickshire (1436~1900) by Joseph McKenna records James Wright of Knowle working in the mid 18th century and this superb pegged oak 30 hour brass dial cottage longcase clock is typical of his work at that period.
Scroll and urn spandrels feature on the 10" square brass dial which has an applied chapter ring signed with the makers name and a matted centre. Steel hands.
The brass 4 pillar plated countwheel movement strikes the hours on a bell.
Typically of clocks from this maker, the hood has a prominent cornice and bold sound fretted frieze carved with a foliate pattern. The glass hood door of pegged construction with moulded edges. An early feature being the lack of hood columns. The slender trunk, again with moulded edges, has a narrow moulded edge door with attractive shaped top and lovely original hinges. Great to see the visible dovetails on the short base. Standing on a simply shaped plinth. Over the centuries the figured oak has acquired fabulous colour & patination.
Standing just 77" tall & well proportioned, this lovely little early clock will continue to grace it's next guardian's home for many more years to come!
Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on the clock movement is included in the price of £4350. |
