David HATFIELD of Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire ~ circa 1825

Various members of the Hatfield family are recorded in Leicestershire Clockmakers by John Daniell and Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World by Brian Loomes. David's father, David, was apprenticed in London in 1732, moving to Husbands Bosworth where he was making excellent clocks by the mid 18th century. Another descendent, John Hatfield, is recorded working in both Kibworth & Wigston in the early 19th century.

This 30 hour duration plated brass chain driven movement with turned & knopped pillar & count wheel striking, sounds the hours on a bell.

The 111/2" square enamelled dial features Roman numerals & semi circular date aperture. The spandrels are decorated with geometric patterns & shell medallions, the dial centre with a basket of flowers & the makers name.

Standing 80" tall without the finial, the nicely figured oak case is very typical of the style associated with this area. The hood, with swan neck pediment & sharks teeth dental ornamentation below the moulding, together with reeded free standing pillars with brass mounts. The trunk with short straight door & cross-banded edge. Supported on a square base & swept bracket plinth. The whole enhanced with decorative mahogany cross-banding.

So gratifying to have found such a pretty cottage clock by a maker working in the early 19th century so close to our own present day premises!

Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on the clock movement is included in the price of £2995.
