Robert
Fletcher is recorded working as a clock & watch maker at several
Chester addresses in the late 18th century ~ Linenhall Street
1782, Foregate Street 1789-95, Higher Bridge Street 1792. The
family business was taken over by his son, also Robert, who
was granted his freedom in 1800.
The eight day duration, plated four pillar rack striking movement
sounds the hours on a bell.
An arched dial features gilt spandrels, the corners painted
with strawberries & flowers, together with a floral bouquet
flanked by gilt scroll work within the arch.
Original diamond pattern hands with a subsidiary seconds dial
above twin winding holes & a semi-circular date aperture are
encompassed by Roman hours & Arabic numerals.
Oak case work is trimmed throughout with mahogany cross banding
& fruitwood to the hood door. Typical characteristics of this
area appear in the reeding to the hood columns, trunk quarter
columns & the canted corners of the base. Other features include
the applied panels to the lower trunk & base with nicely moulded
upper edges standing on good original ogee bracket feet. Standing
85" tall.
A handsome Georgian longcase clock with interesting period detailing
throughout.
