Benjamin Gray is listed in Watchmakers
and Clockmakers of the World Volume II, working from the late
18th century to 1835.
John Daniell in his Directory of Leicestershire Clockmakers
tells us that he was working from a shop in the Market Place
and later, circa 1835, he worked in partnership with William
Gray, presumably a relation, at Cheapside, Leicester.
A well executed and nicely detailed 12" square painted dial
is stamped on the reverse and again on the calendar wheel with
the makers name, Walker & Hughes (Birmingham 1811-35). The spandrels
are of flowers with foliage on a gilt ground around a central
flower head medallion. Roman numerals show the hours and the
typically bold clockmakers name is positioned below a semi-circular
date aperture. The dial centre depicting a hot air balloon possibly
indicating an interest in this pastime by the original owner.
Original matching diamond pattern steel hands.
The rope driven, 30 hour plated movement with outside count
wheel strikes the hours on a bell.
The lovely oak case, standing 83" tall and of equal quality
to the dial, is well decorated with mahogany to the swan neck
pediment, frieze, hood door and throughout the trunk and base.
All further enhanced with boxwood stringing to good effect and
standing on replacement original pattern, shaped bracket feet.
A most attractive 30 hour provincial longcase clock with above
average quality to both dial and casework.
Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on the clock
movement is fully inclusive in the price of SOLD.
