The small square white enamel dial of eleven
inches was manufactured by Walker and Hughes, Birmingham (1812-35)
and is stamped on the reverse of the date wheel. Typically the
spandrels are tastefully and lightly decorated with warm crimson
red flowers. There are Roman hour numerals, Arabic and dotted
minutes together with a semi circular date aperture and decorative
matching brass hands.
A four pillar, chain driven, 30 hour movement striking on an outside
count wheel sounds the hours on a bell.
Wonderfully coloured heavy oak has been employed in the case work
of this traditional Welsh cottage clock, the style of which has
changed little from that of the18th century. Maximum height just
78". The hood has a deep frieze and strong projecting cornice
together with shaped back splats. The stout hood columns have
giltwood capitals. Just below the detailed hood to trunk moulding
is a decorative mahogany panel. The long trunk door is of quarter
cut oak with a shaped top. It is flanked by fluted canted corners
finely worked from the solid oak construction, prominent throughout
the case. The original 3/4" thick backboard is cut from a single
piece of oak. Detailed moulding links trunk to base which shows
typical shrinkage in the panel. All standing on a plinth which
is shaped at the front.
