Longcase Clock made by Daniel DALTON of Church Lawford,
Rugby, Warwickshire ~ circa 1775
Daniel Dalton is recorded by McKenna in Watch & Clock
Makers of Warwickshire working at Church Lawford, Rugby
between 1722~1793. His son, Daniel Jnr also worked at
the same address between 1793~1801. Both are recorded
as repairing & maintaining the clock at Leamington Hastings
church during these periods. Samuel Dalton of Rugby is
also recorded as clock making from 1786-1810.
Rococo scrolling spandrels decorate the 12" brass dial
with a raised boss to the arch inscribed with the makers
name. The silvered chapter ring surrounds a finely engraved
dial centre, sporting a subsidiary seconds dial, twin
winding holes with a semi-circular date aperture beneath.
The twin train, 8 day duration plated movement with knopped
& turned pillars is rack striking, sounding the hours
on a bell. It demonstrates the degree of individual craftsmanship
expected from a good maker of this period.
Georgian design features are seen in the box top case
which is nicely proportioned & constructed of good grained
oak. The hood with serpentine & dentil moulded cornice
above the arched frieze with fluted vertical tablets,
together with corresponding moulded & Greek key base supporting
plain turned columns. The trunk with long narrow door
& nicely shaped top. Taller than wide base standing on
an interesting shaped plinth of bracket feet form. Excellent
colour & rich patination throughout.
A special quality & very handsome Georgian longcase clock
standing 84" tall, with the added appeal of not only a
local but also a well renowned town.
Local delivery, setting up and 12 months guarantee on
the clock movement is included in the price of £6850.
