Antique
longcase clock made by WILLIAM HUNTER of BRIDLINGTON in
Yorkshire ~ circa 1825
William & Richard Hunter are recorded working as clockmakers
in the early 19th century in Burlington, now known as
Bridlington, in Yorkshire.
The
arched dial has well executed marine painting to the
arch & spandrels. The sailing, coastal & light house
possibly depicting local scenes. The dial with Roman
numerals, subsidiary date & seconds dials, with the
makers name to the centre. Original brass hands.
The
8 day plated movement with four turned & knopped pillars
is rack striking & sounds the hours on a bell.
The
neatly proportioned mahogany case, standing 87" tall
including the finial, is of excellent quality. The hood
with swan neck pediment, moulding to the arch, wavy
back splats & reeded columns is complete with its original
gilt brass paterae & finial. The trunk displays nicely
figured mahogany throughout & is of good colour. Box
wood stringing forms panels on the lower case & base.
The dome topped line inlaid door is flanked by reeded
quarter columns. Nice quality mouldings used throughout.
Standing on a swept bracket plinth.
